Five easy photography tips for Catholic organizations

Beautiful, high-quality images can easily transform a website from good to great. Wish you could take better photos? Here are five easy photography tips that will help give your skills a boost, regardless of your level of expertise.

Use the Rule of Thirds

When composing your shots, divide your viewfinder into thirds (vertically and horizontally). Then, position your main subject on one of the spots where the quadrants intersect. Take a look:

This is a widely used strategy that can help you capture more visually interesting photos (instead of simply centering your subject). Use the Rule of Thirds as a guide – not a strict rule – to help you capture more beautiful images.

Hint: Some cameras include a setting that allows you to actually display a grid in your viewfinder to help compose your shots using the Rule of Thirds.

Fill the frame to focus on your subject

Draw the viewer’s attention directly to your subject (and its fine details, features, and texture). Don’t compose photos with awkward or empty spaces that distract from the subject.

Capture photos from a unique perspective

Don’t always take photos from your natural eye level or at the same height on a monopod. Try to capture a unique perspective! Kneel, crouch, use a balcony, or even lay on the ground. Do whatever you can to change your vantage point.

Take photos during The Golden Hour

Taking outdoor photos in the middle of the day can cause harsh, unflattering shadows to be cast over your subject. If possible, take photos during The Golden Hour instead: One hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset. At these times, the sun creates an even, soft light that’s perfect for beautiful photography.

Hint: During The Golden Hour, try positioning your subject in a shaded area to take advantage of the softest natural light conditions.

Don’t forget about white balance

Many cameras allow you to control a setting called white balance. Essentially, setting your white balance accounts for the colors that are created by different types of lights or light sources.

Avoid capturing photos that are too warm (yellow) or too cool (blue). Understanding how to set your white balance for different environments will help your photos looks the most natural and beautiful.
